USING THE FONTS IN NOTEWORTHY COMPOSER.

The Boxmarks.nwc file included in the zip file shows an example of the use of the font set as USER FONT 2.
Do not be misled by the appearance of the font in the display.
You must Print the staff or use the Print Preview option to get a TRUE representation of the marks in the printed output.

1. PAGE SETUP

Run NoteWorthy Composer and open a NWC score file or create a new file.
From the File menu click on Page Setup.

Click on the Options tab.
ENABLE the option Increase Note Spacing for Longer Durations.
Enter the value for the Staff Size you normally use.
The Boxmarks font size should be set to the SAME size as the Staff Size.

Click on the Fonts tab and select one of the User Fonts.
Click on Modify.
Select BOXMARKS from the installed font list.
Select REGULAR as the type option.
Select the SAME point size as the Staff Size as set in the Options tab.
A size a little less than the Staff Size may also be suitable.
Click on OK.

2. ENTERING MARKS AS TEXT

All the marks are added as text using Insert Text or the X hot key.
Add the text character and required spaces in the Text Box.
Select the required User Font from the Arrow List.
Select the Staff Position required.
Most marks are centred on the selected Staff Position.
Lip Up (a) and Fall Off (b) are exceptions.
Click on OK to insert the mark.

Check the vertical position in the screen display.
Go to Print Preview to check the horizontal position - Don't rely on the display.
The true horizontal position can only be displayed in Print Preview.
Return to the score to re-select the mark and adjust as necessary.

3. PRESERVE WIDTH

Most marks are inserted before the note with Preserve Width OFF and generous pre-padding with spaces.
Some marks are added between or before notes with Preserve Width ON and some post-padding with spaces.
These marks include the Multi- Bar Rest Markers, Lip Up (to) and Arpeggio.

Check out the example file Boxmarks.nwc after installing the font.
Select each text mark - click the right mouse button and click on Selection or select and press Ctrl/E.
This will give an indication of how the text was inserted.

You could use Boxmarks.ttf in several User Fonts to vary the mark sizes in the same score if you wish.

COMMENTS

Although these marks may be of use in printing parts for performance they are still a work-around.
I had to make some compromises with the size of some of the marks - at a readable size they tend to run into the following note.
It is difficult to design a mark that connects between notes, such as gliss and slide, because spacing can vary with note duration.
The marks have been designed for the setting :-
Increase Note Spacing for Longer Durations in the Page Set Up Options.
I didn't have much success with this option turned off.

You won't be able to insert the marks within a beamed group - this problem applies to all text.

I wish I could create cymbal note-heads, repeat and rhythm markers as text, but they don't occupy time and cause all sorts of problems in bar alignments and paging.

HTH!!!
